Northrop Grumman Corporate Intranet

Project Summary

In 2014, I led the redesign of Northrop Grumman’s global intranet, transforming a fragmented, outdated SharePoint environment into a unified and intuitive platform. The project focused on improving content strategy, usability, and design consistency across multiple sectors. By auditing and restructuring thousands of page types, I introduced a streamlined information architecture, clear navigation patterns, and a modular visual system that aligned with the company’s brand standards.

The new design modernized the user experience for NG’s employees – making it faster to find resources and perform tasks – while reducing the maintenance burden for content owners. Built entirely within Microsoft SharePoint, the updated intranet balanced enterprise governance with flexibility, setting a new standard for usability and efficiency across Northrop Grumman’s intranet.

I began by conducting a full content inventory across the multiple sector intranets, mapping major content types. Workshops with key sector stakeholders and user-groups revealed priority tasks and user frustrations. With this insight, my team defined a streamlined IA and content model – standardizing metadata, taxonomy, and templates. For design, I developed SharePoint master pages and page-layouts that aligned with corporate brand guidelines while optimizing for usability. I also prepared wireframes and interactive prototypes to test major flows with representative end-users.

I was able to transform Northrop Grumman’s cluttered, hard-to-navigate intranet into a modern, organized platform by streamlining its information architecture, unifying content across departments, and introducing a clean, intuitive design within SharePoint. The result was a visually cohesive, easy-to-use intranet that made finding resources faster, reduced redundancy, and improved the overall user experience.
